WHEN Lenni Smith´s cousin told her he was seeking UK representation for his rock salt products, she couldn’t have imagined what an exotic journey of learning and amazement lay ahead of her. She was looking for an ethically and ecologically sound business which would allow her to work from home; now, 5 years later, Lenni´s company “The Salt Seller Ltd” is well established.
“I began by creating the brand of Salt Lick Stones for horses called SALISEL-98 because this salt is 98% whole, pristine salt with 2% minerals. Salt is an essential ingredient in horses´ diet and in 18 months I’ve sold over 50 tonnes and now have a distribution deal with Dodson & Horrell who sell it all over the UK.”

With one successful brand under her belt, Lenni´s next project is concentrating on the value of whole salt for humans – “the horses know it’s great stuff and have had it to themselves for too long!” she jokes, adding more seriously “The beneficial properties of mountain salt are well known in many cultures and it is used for healing as well as enhancing the flavour of food. We humans are briny creatures and apart from water the desire for salt is the only real craving we have! (Sorry chocoholics!) Our blood, sweat and tears are all salty and we need good salt daily, preferably whole and unadulterated. Refined salt has its uses, but its benefits for living beings is debatable” So instead of reaching for ready-made snacks with a high processed-salt content, Lenni is encouraging us to use her whole salt on our food, “It is rich in natural minerals and helps to achieve our ideal inner balance which should be similar to that of seawater!”

Lenni´s many beautiful products are all made from a pink salt, (tinted by its iron content), mined near the Himalayas, which is several hundreds of millions of years old, having been deposited by the drying up of ancient oceans. “The salt undergoes no refining; nothing is added or taken away. It is hand-crafted into the various product shapes - my supplier helps the miners and their families and I am applying for Fair Trade and Organic status,” she says. There are some unusual salt products in her range, such as the Salt Lamps, from 2kgs up to 100kgs in weight, which adorn her new showroom: “I knew they would be a hit because they are so beautiful and have de-ionising properties which help create a fresh, non-static atmosphere, ideal for those with respiratory ailments or for offices. Many therapists use them in their treatment rooms and they make super night lights. In clusters they create ambient lighting for the bedroom or lounge”. Other lines include a skin care range, deodorant salt stones, bath salts (plain and flower mixed) mini-salt stones for small herbivores and birds, tea-light holders, glass salt and pepper mills and miniature salt canisters for carrying your own salt supply with you at all times!
There’s something for all the family and prices start at a few pounds going up to several hundred.

The Salt Seller Showroom Launch period continues until 20th January 2008 at Lenni’s home, Broad Oak House, in the hamlet of Broad Oak on the B4521 at the crossroads to Garway - central to Hereford, Ross, Monmouth and Abergavenny. The house is well known to many locals as it was a popular pub although it has had residential use for some dozen years. “It needs a bit of work still, but that’s part of its charm!” she says, “The showroom will allow both trade and public to come to me - my poor car’s a bit fed up with lugging tons of salt around!”
